The story of Jonah and the Great Fish demonstrates God's mercy, power, and desire for all people to repent. When God commanded Jonah to preach to the city of Nineveh, Jonah fled in the opposite direction. God sent a great storm, and after Jonah was thrown into the sea, "the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah" (Jonah 1:17, KJV). Jonah remained inside the fish for three days and three nights, where he prayed and turned back to God. The Lord then caused the fish to vomit Jonah safely onto dry land, and Jonah obeyed God's command to preach to Nineveh, leading many people to repent. Jesus later referred to Jonah's three days in the fish as a sign pointing to His own death, burial, and resurrection on the third day (Matthew 12:40), making this account a powerful picture of God's salvation and grace.
