The Virgin Birth is the miraculous event in which Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of the virgin Mary, fulfilling God's promise of the coming Messiah. The angel Gabriel told Mary, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee" (Luke 1:35, KJV), fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, which declared, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Because Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit rather than by a human father, He was fully God and fully man, yet without sin.
