Bethany was a small village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, about 2 miles (3 km) east of Jerusalem (John 11:18, KJV). It was the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, close friends of Jesus, and He often stayed there during His ministry (Luke 10:38–42; John 11). Bethany is best known as the place where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, demonstrating His power over death (John 11:43–44, KJV). It was also in Bethany that Mary anointed Jesus with costly ointment in preparation for His burial (John 12:1–8, KJV). After His resurrection, Jesus led His disciples to the vicinity of Bethany, where He blessed them and ascended into heaven (Luke 24:50–51, KJV). Bethany is remembered as a place of friendship, faith, worship, and the hope of eternal life through Christ.
