Bethlehem was a small town in Judah, located about 6 miles (10 km) south of Jerusalem, and is best known as the birthplace of Jesus Christ, fulfilling the prophecy of Micah 5:2 (Matthew 2:1; Luke 2:4–7, KJV). Its name means "House of Bread," and it was also the hometown of King David, making it known as the City of David (Luke 2:11, KJV). Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem for the Roman census, where Jesus was born and laid in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn. Bethlehem's significance extends beyond history, as it marks the place where God fulfilled His promise to send the Messiah. Though small in size, Bethlehem became one of the most important places in the Bible because it was where the Savior of the world entered human history.
