Capernaum was a town on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel and became the center of Jesus' ministry in Galilee (Matthew 4:13, KJV). After leaving Nazareth, Jesus made Capernaum His home base, teaching in its synagogue, healing the sick, casting out demons, and performing many miracles there (Mark 1:21–34, KJV). It was also the hometown of several of His disciples, including Peter, Andrew, James, and John, who worked as fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. Despite witnessing many miracles, many of its people refused to repent, leading Jesus to pronounce a warning upon the city (Matthew 11:23–24, KJV). Capernaum remains one of the most significant locations in the Gospels because it was the setting for much of Jesus' public ministry and revealed both His power and His call to repentance.
