Jerusalem is an ancient city located in the hill country of Judah, about 35 miles (56 km) east of the Mediterranean Sea and approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of the Dead Sea. It became Israel's capital when King David captured the city, and King Solomon later built the First Temple there (2 Samuel 5:6–9; 1 Kings 6, KJV). Jerusalem is central to the Bible as the place where many key events occurred, including Jesus' crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, as well as the birth of the early church at Pentecost. The Bible also points to the future New Jerusalem, where God will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:2–3, KJV). Because of its unique role in God's plan of redemption, Jerusalem is often called the Holy City.
