Mount Carmel is a mountain range in northern Israel that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea near the modern city of Haifa. It is best known as the place where the prophet Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal to prove who the true God was (1 Kings 18, KJV). After the prophets of Baal failed to answer, Elijah prayed, and the LORD sent fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice, leading the people to declare, "The LORD, he is the God" (1 Kings 18:39, KJV). Following this victory, Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel, and God ended the long drought by sending rain (1 Kings 18:41–46). Mount Carmel remains a powerful symbol of God's supreme authority, the triumph of true worship over idolatry, and the power of faithful prayer.
