Nineveh was the ancient capital of the Assyrian Empire, located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River near the modern city of Mosul in Iraq. It is best known in the Bible as the city to which God sent the prophet Jonah to preach a message of repentance (Jonah 1–3, KJV). Although Nineveh was known for its power, violence, and wickedness, its people humbled themselves after hearing Jonah's warning, and God showed them mercy when they turned from their sins (Jonah 3:5–10, KJV). Years later, the prophet Nahum foretold Nineveh's destruction because it returned to its evil ways, and the city eventually fell in 612 BC. Nineveh's story highlights both God's willingness to forgive those who genuinely repent and His righteous judgment against persistent sin.
