The period of the Kings began when Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel after the people asked for a human ruler (1 Samuel 10, KJV). Saul was followed by King David, who established Jerusalem as Israel's capital and received God's promise that the Messiah would come through his royal line (2 Samuel 7:12–16). David's son King Solomon built the First Temple in Jerusalem, making it the centre of Israel's worship (1 Kings 6). After Solomon's reign, the kingdom divided into the Kingdom of Israel in the north and the Kingdom of Judah in the south (1 Kings 12). The era of the kings continued until both kingdoms were conquered and taken into exile because of their persistent disobedience to God. This period reveals God's faithfulness to His covenant, the consequences of rejecting His ways, and His unfolding plan to bring the promised Messiah through the line of David.
