Jesus wept because He was deeply moved by the sorrow and pain caused by death and because of His compassion for those who were grieving. When Jesus arrived at Bethany and saw Mary, Martha, and the others mourning the death of Lazarus, "Jesus wept"—the shortest verse in the Bible (John 11:35, KJV). Although He knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, Jesus shared in the grief of those He loved, revealing His perfect compassion and humanity. On another occasion, Jesus also wept over Jerusalem because the people had rejected Him and would suffer the consequences of their unbelief (Luke 19:41–44). His tears demonstrate God's loving heart toward humanity and remind believers that Jesus understands their sorrows while offering the hope of resurrection and eternal life.
