The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake in northern Israel, situated about 60 miles (97 km) north of Jerusalem and surrounded by the regions of Galilee and the Golan Heights. Although called a "sea," it is actually a lake fed primarily by the Jordan River. Many of Jesus' most well-known miracles took place there, including walking on the water, calming the storm, and the miraculous catch of fish (Matthew 14:22–33; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 5:1–11, KJV). Several of His disciples, including Peter, Andrew, James, and John, were fishermen on its shores before Jesus called them to follow Him. The Sea of Galilee became the primary setting for much of Jesus' public ministry and remains one of the most significant locations in the Gospels.
