Caiaphas was the high priest of Israel during the ministry, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:3, 57, KJV). As head of the Jewish religious leadership, he played a central role in the plot to arrest and condemn Jesus, presiding over the trial before the Sanhedrin where false witnesses testified against Him. Caiaphas declared that it was better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to perish (John 11:49–52, KJV). Although he spoke for political reasons, his words unknowingly pointed to Jesus' sacrificial death for the salvation of the world. After Jesus affirmed that He was the Son of God, Caiaphas accused Him of blasphemy and supported the decision to hand Him over to the Roman authorities for crucifixion (Matthew 26:63–66, KJV). Caiaphas' story serves as a sobering reminder that religious position without true faith can lead to rejecting God's Messiah.
