Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in the city of Jericho who became one of the most memorable examples of repentance and transformation in the Gospels. Because he was short in stature, Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus as He passed by (Luke 19:1–4, KJV). Jesus stopped, called Zacchaeus by name, and chose to stay at his house, demonstrating God's love for those whom society rejected. Deeply moved, Zacchaeus repented, promising to give half of his possessions to the poor and to repay anyone he had cheated fourfold (Luke 19:8, KJV). Jesus then declared, "This day is salvation come to this house... For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:9–10, KJV). Zacchaeus' story shows that genuine faith in Christ produces repentance, generosity, and a transformed life.
