Goliath was a giant warrior from Gath, one of the cities of the Philistines, and the Bible describes his height as "six cubits and a span" (1 Samuel 17:4, KJV), which is approximately 9 feet 9 inches (about 3 metres) according to the traditional Hebrew text. While some ancient manuscripts record a slightly shorter height, all agree that Goliath was an exceptionally large and intimidating warrior. The Bible does not explain why Goliath was so tall, but he belonged to a group of giants known as the Rephaim, who were known for their unusual stature (2 Samuel 21:15–22). Goliath's great size made David's victory even more remarkable, demonstrating that God's power is greater than human strength. As David declared before the battle, "the battle is the LORD'S" (1 Samuel 17:47, KJV), reminding believers that faith in God can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
