The Jordan River is one of the most important rivers in the Bible because it was the setting for major events in God's plan of redemption. It marked the eastern boundary of the Promised Land, and under Joshua's leadership, God miraculously stopped the river's flow, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground into Canaan (Joshua 3:14–17, KJV). The Jordan was also where the prophet Elijah parted the waters before being taken up into heaven, and where Elisha performed miracles after Elijah's departure (2 Kings 2:8–14). The Syrian commander Naaman was healed of leprosy after washing in the Jordan seven times, just as the prophet Elisha instructed (2 Kings 5:10–14). Most significantly, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, where the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and the Father declared, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:13–17, KJV). Throughout Scripture, the Jordan River symbolizes God's faithfulness, new beginnings, cleansing, and the fulfillment of His promises.
