Sheep are mentioned so often in the Bible because they were central to everyday life in ancient Israel and perfectly illustrate humanity's relationship with God. Sheep depend entirely on a shepherd for guidance, protection, food, and safety, just as people depend on God. Throughout Scripture, God's people are often compared to sheep, and the Lord is described as the Good Shepherd who lovingly cares for His flock (Psalm 23; John 10:11, KJV). Sheep were also commonly used in the Old Testament sacrificial system, pointing forward to Jesus Christ, who is called "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29, KJV). From Genesis to Revelation, sheep symbolize God's care, His guidance, His people, and the sacrifice of Christ, making them one of the Bible's most meaningful and frequently mentioned animals.
